Child who drowned in motel bathtub is identified

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the 10-month-old boy that drowned in a bathtub of a Bakersfield Motel 6.

The coroner identified the boy as Abel Omar Godninez, of Bakersfield, as the child. The boy was found face down in a bathtub on Aug. 14 and was taken to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, where he died on Aug. 15. The boy was one of three children in a room at a Motel 6 on Easton Drive.

The Bakersfield Police Department arrested Celena Duarte Martinez, who was babysitting the children, on suspicion of child endangerment.

KERO-TV Ch. 23 reported that the woman fell asleep after putting Godniez in the bathtub with his twin brother.
