CSUB to name Jeremy Beard as permanent baseball coach

Cal State University Bakersfield will formally name Jeremy Beard as its head baseball coach during a 1 p.m. press conference on Tuesday.

After leading the Roadrunners to a 31-24 record and a third-place regular season finish in the Western Athletic Conference, CSUB decided to remove the interim tag from Beart’s coaching title and elevate him to head coach. Beard got the job in the off-season when the university fired Bob Macaluso in December of 2016. Macaluso served one year as head coach.

Under Beard, the Roadrunners turned in a respectable season and reached the WAC tournament final, where they lost to Sacramento State. Beard, a graduate of Oregon State, joined the CSUB program in 2016 as a pitching and catchers coach.

In the offseason, the Roadrunners have continued to see success with second baseman David Metzgar signing a free-agent contract with the New York Yankees. Ryan Grotjohn was a 10th round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondback in the June Major League Baseball draft.
