Excessive weekend heat makes Kern River even more dangerous

BAKERSFIELD — The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued an excessive heat watch for Friday through next Monday with temperatures expected to reach more than 105 degrees.

Forecasters said the hottest day of the weekend could be Sunday with a high of 107 degrees. The National Weather Service also warns people to stay out of the area’s fast-moving rivers, which are swollen by melting snow at the higher elevations.

Prolonged exposure to these temperatures, especially after a period of unseasonably cool temperatures, will increase the risk of heat related illnesses. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic ailments are the most susceptible to heat related illness. Heat exhaustion, cramps, or in extreme cases, heat stroke can result from prolonged exposure to these conditions. Area waterways running very cold and fast, increasing risk for hypothermia, and water rescues. Pets, crops, and livestock may also require extra care through the hot weather.
