The sobering part of every American roadtrip is the gauge on the dash that indicates the fuel being steadily consumed mile after mile. It is not the dollars and cents of hard-earned paychecks, but the deeper cost, that hurts the most. Driving up the coast of California, we looked out at the massive oil rigs, metal monsters silhouetted against the forested mountains of Channel Islands National Park. And even though these rigs are dormant in the current glut of product (according Baker Hughes anyway), the infastructure remains as a reminder of what we continue to do, one mile after another. The oil fields we saw near Bakersfield went in every direction for miles, a land raped and bled by power lines, drills, and pumps. We have seen so many beautiful reminders of nature's power and grace throughout our roadtrip and have gained an appreciation for the majesty of this country I am forever indebted to and grateful for. But when I think of oil drilling on my beloved east coast or in the teaming wildlife reserves of the Alaskan arctic I know that it is not worth it. I only feel so, so sorry. #ontheroad #oil #nature
