Bakersfield Police identify two suspects in robberies that led to shooting

Bakersfield Police have released the names of two suspects that were involved in a pair of robberies and a pursuit that led to an officer-involved shooting that left another suspect dead.

Police said Wednesday afternoon they arrested Andrew Crotwell, 30, and Anita Carvajal, 44, on a variety of suspected crimes, including murder.

The third suspect, who was driving a maroon Jeep sport utility vehicle, was shot to death by a police officer after a short pursuit in southwest Bakersfield on Tuesday night.

Police investigators said they were able to confirm that the dead suspect and Crotwell were responsible for both robberies and that Carvajal assisted in the robbery that occurred on Stockdale Highway earlier that day. The trio is accused of All India Sweets and Grocery located at 1715 South Real Road, and then robbed a recycling center on Stockdale Highway later in the day.

Police said they suspected a revolver was used in the robberies but the only item they recovered was an Airsoft pistol. Police conducted an extensive search of the area near the crashed Jeep, but could not locate a weapon.

Crotwell was arrested  on suspicion for murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery, conspiracy, resisting arrest, as well as an outstanding warrant through the Kern County Sheriff’s Department for assault with a deadly weapon. Crotwell was also arrested for possession of stolen property relating to the theft of the Ridgeview High School marching band trailer, which occurred in March of 2017.

Carvajal was arrested for murder, robbery, accessory and destruction of evidence.
