SPORTS: CSUB women lose in WAC tourney; CIF state playoffs roll along

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

LAS VEGAS — Cal State Bakersfield women’s basketball team suffered an early exit from the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday with a 59-53 loss in the first round of against Utah Valley University at the Orleans Arena.

UVU (9-21) game will face Seattle U, the second seed on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Redhawks (14-16) defeated Chicago State 78-61 earlier on Wednesday.

CSU Bakersfield has accepted an invitational to play in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The WBI field will be announced late on Monday, Mar. 13. First round WBI games will begin Wednesday and Thursday, March 15 and 16, while the second round games will be played Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19.

CIF-STATE BASKETBALL
BOYS
Bakersfield High School went on the road and defeated Pasadena Maranatha 66-62 in the first round of the CIF-State Southern California Regional Tournament on Wednesday night. The Drillers will hit the road on Saturday when they face No. 2-seeded Anaheim Esperanza in the quarterfinals.

Ridgeview got off to a slow start in its Division I tournament game at Redondo Union and fell 93-81 in the first round. The Wolfpack trailed by as many as 24 points in the game.

GIRLS
Independence High School and Bakersfield Christian High School girls both won in their respective CIF-State Southern California Regional Tournament games. Independence defeated visiting South Gate Legacy 55-53 in a Division II matchup. Independence improved to 24-1 on the season. The Falcons will hit the road to play Long Beach Milliken in a 7 p.m. game Saturday. Bakersfield Christian won 58-46 over Pasadena Westridge in the Division V playoffs.
