Vin’s Humility Fueled 67 Years on Air By RALPH BAILEY

Vin’s Humility Fueled 67 Years on Air By RALPH BAILEY

My obsession with The Los Angeles Dodgers truly went into full effect in the Spring of 1972, when my father’s best friend, Sam Williams, took me and my best friend, Chris Williams, to The Cathedral. Clearly, the first sound that overwhelms the ear as you push through the turnstiles is the familiar melodic voice of Vin. I daresay our relationship back in the day, before televised home games and games on the road were sometimes blacked out, was closer because we depended on him during long home stands. I, like most kids of my era, can remember being nudged awake week nights by the sound of my dad removing my eight inch transistor radio from my pillow after falling asleep to The MAN. But the 70s saw TV sports coverage EXPLODE and we watched Vin and Jerry Daggout on pregame AND post game shows and on the weekends you could catch Vin doing golf with Lee Trevino or more nationally televised baseball games with Joe Garagiola. In fact, if your memory hasn’t faded you remember it was Vin and Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Hank Stram who called the famous Montana to Clark “Catch” on CBS. Whenever I asked my father what does it take to be successful, the first word out of his mouth was always … TALENT. But he always followed that with you also need a little luck, a lot of persistence, God’s will and humility and clearly Vin was blessed with all of the above. There will never be another Vincent Edawrd Scully. And now, when someone asks, ‘Have you ever dated a redhead?’ I can honestly answer I had a mad, crazy love affair with a red head that lasted 44 wonderful years!
