NWS: Poor air quality today, slightly cooler this week

Smoke from fires around the state is drifting into the San Joaquin Valley and portions of Kern County, along with high heat, causing the San Joaquin Valley Air Quality Control District to issue an Air Quality Alert for the region.

The National Weather Service is forecasting slightly cooler temperatures this week, but the cooling trending does not appear to be enough to break the recent grip of 100-plus degree days. For Bakersfield, the National Weather Service’s 7-day forecast features triple-digit forecasts.

Right now, according to NWS data, Bakersfield has had 15 consecutive days of 100-degree temperatures, and today’s forecast is expected to hit 105. That would be the most consecutive days of triple digits in more than 20 years, according to the National Weather Service’s website records.
