UPDATE: Alamo Fire more than 28,000 acres

The massive Alamo Fire, burning east of Santa Maria, has charred more than 28,000 acres and continues to lead to the closure of Highway 166 between Santa Maria and New Cuyama.

While the fire has destroyed just one building, it continues to threaten more than 100 homes in the Tepusquet Canyon area, which is under a mandatory evacuation. The fire is just 15 percent contained but more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze, according to Cal Fire.

The fire started Thursday in San Luis Obispo County but quickly spread south into Santa Barbara County near Twitchell Reservoir.

Just to the south of the Alamo Fire is the Whittier Fire, which is burning in Santa Barbara County near Lake Cachuma. That fire has burned more than 10,000 acres.
