Rash of attempted child abductions raises alarm in Bakersfield

The Kern County Sheriff’s Department has issued an urgent warning after investigating four incidents involving the abduction of children in Oildale and east Bakersfield.

Deputies said two incident occurred in Oildale, and two more in east Bakersfield. In the four incidents, there was a range of reporting of the suspect descriptions.

Deputies said on May 26, in the area of Park Drive and Pioneer Drive at 3 p.m., a man tried to abduct a 10-year-old child. The suspect was described as a medium build white male, 30-35 years old with a beard and blue eyes in a black hooded sweatshirt. He was driving a white sedan and the the license plate on the suspect’s vehicle was from California and began with 7RAP. The child was eventually able to flee and was unharmed.

The second incident took place June 7 near North High School around 12:55 p.m. Deputies said a full pickup truck being driven by an average build Hispanic male in his 30s, with short black hair and a mustache attempted to abduct a 17-year-old child. The vehicle was described as a possible 2000s model full-size pickup which was spray painted red and had a white hood. There was no rear license plate on the pickup and the front license plate was positioned in the front windshield. The pickup also had the front windows tinted. The child was able to flee unharmed.

The third incident took place on June 8, in the area of Breckenridge Road and Royal Way at about 12:25 p.m. Deputies described a light blue sedan, possibly a Honda, being driven by a white male attempted to get an 11-year-old child to enter his vehicle by stating the child’s mother had sent him. The child fled unharmed.

The fourth incident took place on June 9 in the area of North Chester Avenue and Warren Avenue at about 6:50 a.m. It was reported that an older model grey Honda four door vehicle being driven by a tall, skinny white male in his early 20’s attempted to get a 14 year child to enter his vehicle. The child fled unharmed.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incidents and encourages anyone with information to contact the Kern County Communications Center at (661)861-3110.
