Highland High to host plant sale May 20

If all goes according to plan, this may be one of Bakersfield’s most unique shopping opportunities, especially if you need plants.

The first-ever Scotsmen Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Highland High School, and it features plants, succulents, annuals, perennials, fruit trees and vegetable plants all grown by the students of the school’s horticulture program.

“This is the first year the Scotsmen Market has been organized and the students look forward to this being an annual event which the local community will look forward to,” Highland High agriculture teacher Craig Davidson said.

Students have been using the school’s farm to grow the plants and the proceeds from the sale will go to support the program.

Within the senior class, and under the direction of two student market managers, every student has

been serving on committees to ensure a successful event, with the purpose to teach students about real-world business skills, agricultural regulations, and economics.

The sale will take place at the farm across the campus at 2900 Royal Scotts Way.
