Supervisor Couch offers his opinion on “law and order county”

Kern County Supervisor David Couch was a guest on “First Look with Scott Cox” on Wednesday — the day after the Board of Supervisors heard a controversial proposal from Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

On Tuesday, Youngblood proposed making Kern County a “law and order county” versus one that would offer sanctuary status to illegal immigrants. The California Senate has approved Senate Bill 54 that would restrict local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.

After a lengthy debate, along with more than an hour of citizen comments, Couch made a motion to accept the tenants of Youngblood’s proposed resolution, but the motion died due to a lack of second motion. However, Supervisors voted 4-1, with Supervisor Leticia Perez dissenting, to instruct county staff to write a resolution opposing SB 54.

“I wanted to say what the sheriff wanted to say,” Couch said. “I think we have every right to say that.”
