CSUB professor assesses Trump’s first 100 days in office

Judging a president on their first 100 days has been the standard of performance for decades, but in recent weeks President Donald Trump has pushed back against the measurement.

During the April 27 episode of “The Richard Beene Show,” Cal State University Bakersfield political science professor Jeanine Kraybill put the “first 100 days” into further context during a 22-minute interview with host Richard Beene.

“This idea of the first 100 days really starts with (Franklin Delano Roosevelt),” Kraybill explained. “When he comes into the presidency and he’s dealing with the Great Depression he calls a special session of Congress. In some ways he’s pretty strategic in doing that because he wanted their buy in, in regards to getting the economy in a better place. So he calls this special session together, and he was pretty smart to do that, because they passed a lot of his New Deal programs.”

Leading up this election, Trump promised many things in his first 100 days in office, but only a handful have been accomplished. However, a major win was getting Judge Neil Gorsuch appointed to the Supreme Court, but Kraybill said many things have still not been completed.

“We are seeing he hasn’t had a major legislative achievement yet,” Kraybill said.
