Sikh Women to host Bakersfield 5k fun run on Saturday

The Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association will host its second 5-kilometer fun run at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Riverwalk Park in Bakersfield to raise funds for scholarships and to help support the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter.

Raji Brar, who is a member of the group, was a guest on Wednesday’s “The Greg Kerr Show,” heard on ESPN Bakersfield 1230/98.1, to discuss some of the work the group does. Brar said the money will help take homeless children to movies, and other services. The group has also raised more than $60,000 in scholarships for local students.

“Our hope of giving out scholarships is that these students will one day pay it forward and help others,” Brar said.

Just some of the other activities at the run will be face and henna painting, wellness checks and food, including the award-winning Chile Verde mac and cheese from Brar’s Countryside Grill. The registration starts at 6:30 a.m. with the race beginning at 8 a.m. The day-of registration cost is $30.

The Sikh community continues to play an active role in a wide range of community events, and Brar said it’s important to raise awareness about Sikhs. For more information visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sikh-womens-association-5k-walk-for-equality-tickets-33324454340?aff=efbneb
