Sheriff deputies make arrest after finding woman’s body in shallow grave

Kern County Sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in a shooting that left a woman dead in Twin Oaks.

Deputies said they have arrested Cori Cotton, 33, on suspicion of murdering another woman after an argument in the area of Back Canyon Road and Caliente Creek Road in Twin Oaks.

In a news release, deputies said the shooting happened March 28. During the argument, Cotton is accused of shooting the woman once and then firing at the woman’s boyfriend, who was able to flee uninjured. Deputies said Cotton was accompanied by her boyfriend, Bret Stroud, 56.

On April 4, deputies served a search warrant at the property where the shooting was alleged to have happened, and they found multiple firearms at the location but not the body of the woman.

Today, deputies, along with the Coroner’s office and the sheriff’s Off-Highway Vehicle Team, were able to locate a grave site and discovered the woman’s body in a shallow grave. The coroner has not identified the victim yet.

Cotton was arrested for one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder. She was booked into the Central Receiving Facility and is being held without bail. Stroud was arrested for multiple weapons violations and being an accessory to murder. He was booked into the Central Receiving Facility. His bail has been set at $75,000.
