McCarthy dodged a bullet

Look, Kmac was working the phones hard the night before the vote for Speaker, and it became apparent pretty quickly that the Freedom caucus was standing firm, withholding well more than the 29 votes required to derail McCarthy’s nomination. So the same guys who made Boehner’s job impossible to do kept Kmac from getting the same impossible job. I have to believe that he’s feeling some measure of relief, even if it means watching the GOP degenerate into a manic free-for-all, where nobody wants to be seen as running the show. What a mess.
