FRANCHISE FOUR? FORGET ABOUT IT By RALPH BAILEY

It’s always damn near impossible to put a “Mount Rushmore” together of ANY sporting team. Hell, I’ve gotten into some pretty good debates about who should be on the REAL Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. But the knuckleheads who put the latest group of “Franchise Four” could not have been more wrong. For example, for the Yankees, I get the Babe, Lou and Joltin’ Joe. But Mantle over Derrick Jeter. Hear my out before you curse me out! Mantle admitted he dogged it. He conceded at the end of his life that he “blew it.” In on of the most moving speeches since Gehrig’s July Fourth good bye address, Mantle said God blessed him with a body that he abused with alcohol and late nights while Jeter was the epitome of hard work, diligence and relentless effort. But the even larger travesty reared its ugly head on the other coast where “experts” got off to a good start with the Dodgers with Jackie and Sandy. Drysdale was controversial but acceptable but Duke Snyder over, (you fill in your favorite here) Maury Wills, Fernando, The Bull Dog or even Kirk Gibson, c’mon!!! These are the arguments that make it fun to get a haircut in the black community and I still say you can’t talk Dodgers without mentioning Fernandomania!!!!
