Egos take the night off for Media Music Jam

Local media types are a pretty funny bunch. Everybody is usually pretty competitive, and more than willing to elbow each other out of the way for the next camera shot or ratings point. This leads to all kinds of snipping at each other, gossip, and generally childish behavior. But get all these people together for a common cause, and the dynamic changes instantly. Last night was the Media Music Jam, an amateur concert to benefit the Kern Cancer Fund held at the Crystal Palace. Local folks from tv, radio and print journalism all took to the stage (backed by an actual band) to entertain a huge crowd of people who were there to see all their favorite news types sing. Yes, it was a huge success, and yes, it was a lot of fun, but for me the best part was seeing all these guys and gals legitimately rooting for each other. And some of these people are really good! Some. But for one night a year, we all get together, have a great time, and raise some serious cash for a great cause. Now we have the rest of the year to try to beat each other out of viewers, readers or listeners while we wait for the call from bigger markets.
