JANUARY 27, 2012 -- If you have fruit trees and you want to help the Homeless, Feed The Need may be just the encouragement you need to get started.
Owner-Operator of Fence Menders, Rick Keel, who is also founder for Feed The Need, appeared on Kern Radio, News Talk 1180 to discuss how to get involved with picking fruit that is wasting away in local back yards.
"I'm in people's back yards every single day fixing fences. I see all these fruit trees that just waste," he said. "I'm trying to get people to understand there's a lot of value in that fruit."
Seeing tangerines, grapefruit, oranges, lemons, persimmons and more, Keel said he can't pick all the fruit himself. "Pick your fruit. Take it to the needy," he said.
Keel doesn't make any money off the project and simply wants people to take their excess fruit to churches, homeless shelters, gleaners and more to help the needy.
"Last year we hauled 18 tons to the needy," Keel said. He said he needs people to volunteer three or more hours of time.
