Garbage-Loving Artist Christoph Buchel To Bury Jet In Desert

JANUARY 27, 2012 -- Is Christoph Buchel the next Christo-like artist to create art for Kern County travelers to check out?

The Swiss artist reportedly plans to bury a decommissioned 727 in the Mojave Desert near
Boron, Calif.

KERO said Buchel wants to bury the jetliner thirty-eight feet underground and make it into some sort of tourist spot. According to the Washington Post, Buchel has already created a maze in a garbage dum in Paris’s famed Palais de Tokyo, as well as a community center for London's poor inside a blue-chip gallery.

The jet burial project is slated to be named "Terminal," which could mean for a precarious bathroom stop for travelers from Bakersfield to Las Vegas. Those who aren't fond of tight spaces might not enter the below-ground craft, as people would enter from a tunnel, then descend into the craft for use of its tiny restrooms.

Buchel has applied to Kern County for a conditional use permit.
