What's Really Going On?

As many of you know, I began as a print reporter down south with "The Los Angeles Sentinel", a black weekly in South Central and started my professional career here with "The Bakersfield Californian". So I could not have been happier when "The Suits" here hit me up about writing a blog.

My goal: to write twice maybe three times a week delving deeper into issues talked about on the show or reaching out to subjects that, for whatever reason, we didn't tackle on the broadcast. In the meantime, if you have topic ideas or want to comment on past blogs feel free to contact me at the website or via e mail at ralphbailey@kernradio.com.

The Power of Radio

When I first got into radio I detested being asked to host this or emcee that. I felt it was an intrusion on my time the way I felt homework carved into my childhood. But now that the show and I have both grown and folks actually believe our presence makes a difference it now seems that attending these events is about the only worthwhile thing I do, said the man who earns a check for running his big bazoo three hours a day. This weekend is no exception when I return to the eastside to play auctioneer for the Our Lady of Guadalupe dinner Saturday, Feb. 15 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on Brundage. Church and school officials will be on the program with details later in the week but I wanted to take the time to remind ALL of you if you have an event or a program coming up and want to use us as an audio billboard, feel free. It is the least we can do!
Can’t tell you how happy I was to get an early morning call from local liberal, TV commentator and overall good egg, Gene Tackett. Gene, a former legislator, political consultant and currently a  TV commentator on KGET TV 17, along with our very own Cathy Abernathy, lost his lovely wife Wendy Wayne to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2012 and he comes on the show today (Tuesday) to agree with me:  what’s wrong with using Wendy to promote higher learning. Yes, the entire manner in which the effort got off the ground was botched. First, folks at CSUB, namely Evelyn Young, appealed to state legislators like Shannon Grove when in fact it’s a city matter and secondly, one must wait five years after the subject’s death before their name can be immortalized. So, as reported in TBC, the on line efforts stop and I suppose we wait till 2017. In the meantime, Gene joins us on “TRBS” today (Tuesday) at 3:30. See you on the radio! RB
