Kern County Sheriff's Deputies say it's homicide: That's the word in the case of Sonia Serna whose body was discovered near the shoulder of Mountain View Road outside Lamont on June 20th. The Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's help with any information regarding Serna's whereabouts prior to her death. Kern County Waste Management reminds you to tarp your trash: Starting August 1st, the Waste Management Department will be charging five dollars per ton, along with a five dollar minimum per load fee to all vehicles that come to any of disposal site locations with an unsecured or untarped load. It's all in an effort to help reduce the litter that may fly out of vehicles on the way to the dump. For more information contact Waste Management.
The Killer Kern claims another victim from the southland: 42-year old Claudio Estrada of San Fernando drowned Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Park north of Kernville. A witness says Estrada had been playing with his kids in a beach raft around 3:15 when the raft flipped over. People on the shore tried to make a human chain to rescue Estrada but they say the current was too strong. Search and Rescue teams found Estrada's body stuck in some rocks.
Two Bakersfield women are set to receive high honors from the state senate:
State senator Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield will recognize Debbie Moreno and Wendy Wayne as the recipients of the 18th Senate District's Woman of the Year awards for 2009 and 2010. Moreno was picked for more than two decades of service to the community and the state. She is currently the President and CEO of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce. Wendy Wayne is described as the "Mother Theresa of Bakersfield," in recognition of her decade's worth of humanitarian work in the community and overseas. Wayne is a practicing nurse who has helped heal children in Kern County as well as poverty-stricken countries throughout the world. The awards happen tomorrow (thur) in Bakersfield.
The wildfires in the mountains east of Bakersfield have gotten the attention of the Governor: Governor Schwarzenegger Tuesday declared Kern County a disaster area due to the fires in the mountains of eastern Kern. The combined total of devastation caused by the Bull and Ranch Fires is more than 15,000 acres burned. 2,300 people have been forced from their homes. In May, the Governor signed an executive order which mobilized the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and other state agencies to use the additional resources and personnel needed to save lives and protect homes statewide from wildfires.
Explorers return home: Members of the Bakersfield Police Department Explorers program have returned home from Atlanta, Georgia after attending the program's Law Enforcement Exploring National Conference where explorer Captain Kelsey Taylor of Bakersfield was elected National Law Enforcement Exploring Youth Representative. The position represents 35-thousand explorers constituting more than 16-hundred posts throughout the nation and abroad.
